Optical Illusion for Digipack

For the inside of our digipack we will be using an optical illusion in order to keep consistency from scenes in our video.
Creating our own optical illusion was not something that was possible due to the standard of programme we have access to as well as our own skills. Because of this we have found an optical illusion from an online source which can be found here and adapted it using Photoshop.

As we are aware that the original image is not our own we emailed the website asking permission to use their image for our coursework. Below is the email which we sent to the company explaining how it would be used.

A few seconds after sending the email we received an automated response.

In order to adapt the image and make it our own we used the twirl filter on Photoshop.

This is the final optical illusion which we have created and will be used for the inside back of our digipack which the CD disk will sit on top of.

Poster Designs

Design 1

Design 2

Design 3

Design 4

We will be using the same image in the poster as we will be for the front cover of the digipack, as through our research we have found that this is a popular promotional method to ensure that a digipack is instantly recognisable. We will also be using the same font as seen on the digipack to ensure there is consistency throughout our products. The designs which we feel are most appropriate would be 3 or 4 due to the large text at the top of the page making it clear what the poster is advertising. The large head in the centre of the page also allows us to follow the rule of thirds, by balancing other aspects around it while keeping the model the main focus. After further thought in the group, we will be using an image where the model has her mouth shut and her lips are plump as they work well as a visual weight to the centre of the page and also are a prominent part of our video which we want to connect the products with.

Draft Inside Image

Original Image

Draft Image

We are happy with the background being a crisp white in this image and the fact that is is rather bright, reflecting the upbeat and live feel which the video has. The pose of this shot is also very effective due to the models sharp side profile, emphasizing her cheekbones.
However the when increasing the brightness of the image we have also done so to her lips meaning that they are now too bright for the colour red lipstick which she has worn throughout the video and on other pages of the digipack. When improving this I will make these lips a darker, deeper red as seen before. The shadows which she had around her chin due to the fur coat are also seen more when the image is brighter therefore I will remove those in addition to the freckles on her face which makes the image look messy. Another feature which we will improve will be the orange which can be seen in her hair line, likely to be from make up however extenuated by the adjustments we have made.  Her hand looks slightly too red and I will make this lighter to match the rest of her skin which is on show.

Draft Video 2

We created this as the final cut of our video however after further reflection realised we was not happy with the falling barbie scene and thought that some slow motion and blur effects needed to be added to it.

Ancillary Photos

The final images which we have chosen to use for our ancillary products are as follows , we will now edit these photos to improve the quality and make them more suited to our theme.

Front Cover

The main focus of this photo is the models lips, a heavy visual weight in the centre of the shot makes it perfect for the front cover as it will instantly attract the viewers eye. the models expression in this shot is not clear, giving off a mysterious vibe about her anitcs or persona. This is a provocative shot as it is clear that she is not wearing any clothing and therefore fits with the theme of the video.

Reverse Cover

When this is used for the digipack reverse cover we will be cropping out the elbows of the model in order to make it the square shape which it needs to be. You are able to see the fierce and playfulside of the model in this shot as she is mucking up her hair by pulling it, this is also a way of conveying her rebellion as she does not care if she is mucking things up even when she is clearly attempting to present herself well with heavy make up. There is a good amount of room on the models back for us to write the track-list &her hair line is coming down to a point as we wanted as this looks neat and is a good place for our text to start.
Inside Page

This photo is defines all of the models features perfectly, her defined cheek bones, plump lips, well shaped hair line and strong eyes. We could not be happier with the way which this image has come out. Mirroring a scene from the video this is going to be used for the left inside page of the digipack. We will be making the background whiter however not too much as we don't want the dog to blend in the background.

Copyright Infomation on Digipack

Through researching what must be include on the reverse page of digipacks I have found that the copyright information must be clear and in an easily visible place. The information which must be included within this is
  • Album Producers
  • Artist Management
  • Record Label
  • Website to contact record label

After looking at the copyright information on these hard copies of digipacks I looked at what was included on the digipack of our chosen song ; Kesha - We Are Who We Are; in order to find out the copyright infomation for this particular song which we must include on the reverse of our digipack

CD Copyright

After looking at CDs which I had at home for design ideas, I found that there was the copyright feature which must be included onto them. This can be done in a number of ways ( as the different disks show below) however must be present in order for the material to be protected by the copyright act.
What should be printed onto the disk includes-

  • The record label of the artist who own the rights
  • The year of production
  • Unauthorised use such as copying, reproducing, hiring, lending, public performance and broadcasting is prohibited.

This disk has the copyright statement going just around the top semi-circle of the CD, making it look like there's not too much to read which is more inviting than a big lump of text.

The copyright statement going all around the edge of this disk in a complete circle. This is such aesthetically pleasing as although its there for a purpose it also acts a borer which is a nice way of finishing the disk.

In this case, the statement is in a block in the middle of the disk, I don't think this looks appealing at all as it just looks random and ruins the design of the CD which has been thought out carefully

In regards to the designs for the disk we have already though about I think the copyright statement going all around the edge of the disk would be the best for us, giving us a border look around the disk as well.

Another feature in terms of copyright protection that the disk includes is thumbnail icons of the management of the artists, record label, artists record label.

Global Talent Agency
Maximum Artist Management
Island Record Group

Hollywood Records
(marketed by) Universal Music Group

For the song which we are using, the companies which we should be referencing on the disk include
RCA Records

Advanced Alternative Media

Photoshoot 2

I am very happy with the way these photos have turned out, and so are Lucy and Maisie. We feel that the brightr lighting which we achieved by taking the diffusers off the lamps has given the model a much more light hearted look, teaming this with her improved facial impressions these shots are exactly what we were aiming to achieve. After looking at them all we will be choosing one where the model is looking straight on making her big red lips the main focus rather than her side profile which we will show off in another shot. The fact that the background is not perfect white is not an issue as this can easily be edited in photoshop.

These shots are more successful than before, lighting the models skin more to make it look smoother. The back of the model is also more on show meaning that we have more room to write the tracklist down her back. The models hands are also positioned in a better fashion than they were previously, showing off more of her fierce side which can also be seen in some scenes of the video. We will also make the background of the photo brighter white in photoshop to create a crisper finish.

By simply brushing the dog to make him look neater and fluffier has improved these shots as there is more of a connection between him and the fur coat. After reflecting on the previous shot we can also see that the models make up is a lot more precise in this shot and there is more focus on her lips as well creating a connection between the photo which will be on the front page of the digipack and this which will be on the inside.

Specific Poster Research

All of the above images are ones which we looked into when researching the type of album covers and all of them use the same image which they did on the cover on their poster too. Looking at these posters which use similar close up images like ours, with emphasis on the lips, has allowed me to see where I should position things on the page to make it look most effective as well as what I should include.
I have found that I should include artists name, album title, release date. In addition to this I should include a statement such as 'brand new album,' and a single which the audience are already familiar with in order to attract the audience.

As you can see all of the posters use the same image as the front cover of their albums.

Font Research

Above you can see the research which we have carried out into the font which will be used on all products related to our video in order to keep a house style between the promotional methods. The research began using all sans serif font as this was one things we were sure we wanted our font to look like in order to give off the bold and bright impression. Throughout this research we have refined a number of different fonts down in order to come up with this as our final.

We have chosen to use capitals to continent to emphasise the bold look of the font making it seem more powerful. The colours which we have continued to use the colour scheme from our video in order to gain continuity throughout the products. The use of a # in the title keeps it very current and attractive to our target audience as well as working as a free method of promotion on social media
