Our Products In Relation To Media Theory

LAURA MULVEY

It could be argued that we have applied Laura Mulveys theory of conventional narrative into our video through the story which we are telling. Mulveys theory, conveyed through her work of 'Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema,' states that narrative films use women in order to provide pleasurable visual experience for men.  She believes films are structured to show women appearing through the 'male gaze,' degrading them and making them comparable to the status of an object. Mulvey continues by stating that in a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active dominant male and passive female. Mulvey would believe that the acts which the characters in our video are taking part in, for instance lifting up their tops to a busy motorway without showing their face, shows these women objectifying themselves to men. However, I would argue from a more modern point of view that this video shows the free will of women. These characters are not following any rules which have been set by men and are shown to be having fun, being independent and free which was the message which we wanted to convey with our video; it is for this reason that I believe Mulveys theory is not applied to our video.
